The Russian School of Mathematics Honors Local Students

The Russian School of Mathematics (RSM) brought together more than 1,300 students, parents, and teachers across New Jersey for its annual award ceremony in June, recognizing 320 students for their achievement in mathematics and their participation in national and international competitions.


RSM's Annual Award Ceremony in New Jersey recognizes students across multiple program levels for academic achievement, effort, and growth.


Among them were 136 students from RSM Princeton, RSM's largest New Jersey location, including the following students from Montgomery. Of those, 68 earned medals in the International Math Contest, with additional students placing in the CML Math Challenge, MOEMS, and Math Kangaroo.

The event highlighted both academic excellence and the school's broader educational focus on developing reasoning, communication, and problem-solving skills from an early age.


"Mathematics is not only about finding answers, but about learning how to think, how to explain ideas clearly, question assumptions, and approach unfamiliar problems with confidence," said Inessa Rifkin, co-founder of the Russian School of Mathematics.


Founded in 1997 by Inessa Rifkin and Irina Khavinson, the Russian School of Mathematics (RSM) is one of the largest K–12 after-school math enrichment programs in North America. Today, RSM operates more than 75 locations across the United States and Canada and serves over 90,000 students, including four locations in New Jersey: RSM Princeton, RSM Edison, RSM Livingston, and RSM Montgomery.


RSM's curriculum begins at age 4 and emphasizes deep conceptual understanding, logical reasoning, and problem-solving. Students are encouraged to articulate their thinking through classroom discussions, oral presentations, and structured problem-solving approaches that go beyond memorization.

RSM believes mathematics provides students with a strong foundation for analytical thinking and intellectual curiosity. Through its curriculum, RSM helps students develop logical reasoning, critical thinking, communication skills, and confidence in solving non-routine problems by encouraging them to justify their thinking, evaluate multiple approaches, and explain their solutions verbally from an early age.


"Our curriculum harnesses a child's natural inclinations and thinking patterns to ensure they remain engaged, challenged and growing throughout each lesson," said Sona Antonyan, RSM Regional Vice President.


Each year, RSM's Annual Award Ceremony recognizes students across multiple program levels for academic achievement, effort, and growth. In addition to its core curriculum, RSM offers a competition track for students interested in advanced mathematical topics and participation in challenging math competitions.

RSM students regularly take part in national and international mathematics competitions, with many continuing their academic journeys at leading universities.


Fall classes are now enrolling at all four RSM New Jersey locations. Families can schedule a free 30-minute evaluation to find the right level for their child before classes fill up.
