Montgomery Mayor Neena Singh was present for the grand opening/Desi Style Festival on Saturday, Oct. 17, that attracted thousands of people. In fact, it got so crowded that entry had to be stopped.

Somerset County Dispatch reported, cars backed up for miles on Route 206, and people walking on the highway.

Multiple 911 calls were made regarding the traffic, and complaints of people making illegal U-turns, fender benders, and pedestrians almost getting hit.

However, the grand opening was lively, filled with people, Punjabi music, barbecue, and a bazaar style atmosphere. Folks could purchase just about anything, from juttis, kurtis, falooda boba, chatpata, kabobs and more. There were henna tatoos, bull rides, train rides, dancing, and farm animals.

Farm History

The farm had been put into conservation by Rev. David “Mac” McAlpin Jr. who was a prominent Princeton-area Presbyterian minister, civil rights activist, philanthropist, and conservationist. McAlpin lived on his Skillman property, then known as Manor Brook Farm, from 1971 until he moved to the continuing care facility at Stonebride at Montgomery.

Rev. McAlpin had deep connections to the local landscape, serving in leadership roles with The Watershed Institute (formerly the Stony Brook Millstone Watershed Association) and operating Manor Brook Farm, raising organic and grass-fed beef. He died in Skillman on August 5, 2022, at the age of 94.

In 2004, Mark and Lynne Faille founded Simply Grazin’ and ran the farm. They added the Skillman Farm Market and Butcher Shop — selling meat and farm-to-table products.

“We believe in knowing the farmers and knowing the food, so we can ensure you are getting the freshest, most delicious cuts of meat without harmful chemicals,” the Faille family posted on the Simply Grazin’ website.
