It takes quite the effort to remove Emma Seamon from a soccer pitch.

The Montgomery senior is committed to William & Mary next year. Head Coach Yannick Smith selected her a captain, and she leads the Cougars with 20 goals through 14 games. She is never fully satisfied.

Pre-practice. During practice. Post-practice. Recovery. Whatever it takes to bring home a state championship.

“If I take her off, I think she won’t talk to me for about a week,” Smith said, only half-jokingly. “… I think her leg would have to be falling off for her to agree to come out.”

“She’s a young professional,” Smith added. “She trains like she’s a pro, and it’s cool to see because it’s the reason it translates so easily for her.

But, you know, she gets to the field early. She’ll do finishing on her own. She’ll do technical work… It’s just all the things that you would expect of someone who’s gonna go play soccer at the next level.”

Beyond those off-foot finishes, preparing for charging defenders and putting herself in uncomfortable positions, Seamon has taken better care of her body than ever.

“I rarely did recovery days after; now after every game, I’m in the gym doing stretching and movement, just to get the blood flowing,” Seamon said. “My nutrition as well. Last year, I felt like I was just burning everything off anyway, so I kind of ate whatever. But this year, it’s a lot more structured.”

“Sometimes, kids get to college and have to learn these things. She’s doing it right now,” Smith added.

Seamon’s dedication to the team was on full display during their match at Hunterdon Central. She was taken down for a penalty kick and lost one of her contact lenses. “She keeps telling me, she’s like, ‘Just put me back in,’” Smith said.

A mere minute or so later, Emma scored. Smith feels that because she is such an integral piece of the squad, there are times she needs to slow down and not overwork her body.

“Yeah, I don’t like when he does that. If he even thinks about taking me out, I like get mad at him,” Seamon said.

But that stubbornness also comes with open dialogue, one which players like her only gain through earned reputation.

“We have a good relationship where I can tell him how I’m feeling and he can do the same for me,” she added.

“I’ve always been coached with a hard nose. ‘Tell me how it is, and don’t sugarcoat it,’” Seamon said about the method she tries to emulate. “And I really like that because there’s no beating around the bush. Like, you’re going right into exactly what needs to be fixed, what needs to be better.”
