Donald W. Matthews leaves behind a long legacy of public service — 57 years to be exact — to his beloved township. He died on Saturday, October 31, at 8 pm, at the age of 96. During his many years in Montgomery, Don built trust and connection as an elected official and established and served on organizations that brought neighbors together and strengthened social bonds.

Don was a charter member of The Rotary Club of Montgomery and Rocky Hill, and he served as one of the club's first presidents. Rotary released the following statement:

"Don was one of the kindest gentlemen you could ever meet. He deeply loved his family, his friends, and the Montgomery Township community. Throughout his life, he made a difference in the lives of countless people, and his dedication, love, and unwavering support for Rotary were truly endless."

Don retired from public service last year, at the age of 95. He had served the township in many roles beginning in 1968 as a member of the Civilian Defense Council. He served as a Republican on Township Committee from 1983 to 2003, and as mayor in 1985, 1986, 1993, 1996, 1997, and 2000. He also was instrumental in obtaining numerous land acquisitions for Open Space and Farmland Preservation in the township — including a section of his dairy farm on Route 206.

According to a Montgomery Township Committee proclamation from December 2025: "Don’s service reflects a rare and commendable commitment to public service that has shaped the very fabric of Montgomery Township; and his contributions have touched nearly every aspect of township life— from public safety and  environmental stewardship to historical preservation and community wellness— leaving an indelible legacy of  thoughtful governance and heartfelt care for his fellow citizens."

Don leaves behind his wife, Pat, and a large and loving family.

The Montgomery News will publish the family's obituary when it is available. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
