New e-bike regulations are now in effect across New Jersey.

New E-bike regulations in NJ

New e-bike regulations are now in effect across New Jersey.

New Requirements

Under the new law, individuals operating an e-bike must have:

  • A valid driver’s license (generally age 17 and older), or a motorized bicycle license (for individuals ages 15–16).

  • Children 14 years of age and younger are prohibited from operating e-bikes.

Registration & Insurance Requirements All e-bikes must be registered with the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission. All e-bikes must carry liability insurance in accordance with state requirements.

Six-Month Grace Period

To assist residents with the transition, a six-month grace period has been established through July 19, 2026, allowing time for operators to obtain proper licensing and to complete registration and insurance requirements.

During this period, officers will focus primarily on education and outreach. After July 19, 2026, enforcement actions may include summonses and fines for non-compliance.

The Montgomery Police Department reminds all riders to wear helmets, obey traffic laws, and operate e-bikes responsibly.
