Eugene Gregory Baker, 78, Dies - Worked on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor

Eugene Gregory "Gene" Baker, 78, formerly of Montgomery Township, died peacefully on April 30, in Venice, Florida surrounded by his loved ones.


Born in Skowhegan, Maine, Gene lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his career, and his many passions. Gene earned a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maine. His professional journey began at General Electric before he transitioned to Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) in the early 1980s as a senior engineer.


Over the course of his distinguished career at PPPL, Gene played a pivotal role in developing power supply plans for groundbreaking projects such as the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor and the National Spherical Torus Experiment machines. He retired in 2015 after decades of innovative contributions to the field of plasma physics.


Gene’s greatest accomplishment was raising his two daughters alongside his beloved wife Martha. Married for 51 years, their partnership was a testament to love and devotion. Gene is survived by wife Martha; daughters Michelle and Juliann; son-in-law Nicholas; brothers Ernest and Joseph; nieces Joyce, Lisa, Lana, Melissa, Emily, Elizabeth, Natalie, and Jenna; nephews Amos, John, Jonathan, Charles, Peter, Michael, Michael and Troy; as well as numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.


He was predeceased by his parents Romeo and Ella; father-in-law William; mother-in-law Magdalene; and brother Martin.


Gene will be remembered for his humor, charisma, intelligence, kindness, and unwavering support for those around him. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May his legacy bring comfort to those who mourn his passing.
