In addition to a feature article, each athlete receives gift certificates to The Tiger’s Tale and Beniamino's Cucina and Pizza. Emma Seamon and Gavin Fong are the February 2026 Athletes of the Month for The Montgomery News.

In this age of increasingly specialized athletes – year-round practices for the same sport – Montgomery junior Emma Seamon is a reminder of how kids should approach athletics. A star forward for the Cougars’ soccer team and starting goaltender for the Hopewell- Montgomery co-op team, Seamon has become an invaluable part of each program.

Wrestling never stops for senior Gavin Fong. He has risen through the ranks that the late-great John Moyle started, beginning in the youth program, and a decade later, he is a team captain for the Cougars and closing in on the illustrious 100 career wins mark.

The January 2026 athletes are swimmer Angela Liu and basketball player Ethan Lin.

Angela Liu is more than a champion swimmer, she is also a semifinalist in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program — one of 16,000 exceptionally academically talented high school seniors in the U.S. Liu has always been willing to bet on herself.

Montgomery High School athletic director and boys’ basketball coach Kris Grundy had been reluctant to nominate one of his own players for an Athlete of the Month award. He likes to give the spot to athletes who excel in the lesser talked-about sports, so they get a chance to earn their spot in The Montgomery News. However, he could not hold his tongue. Scholar-athlete Ethan Lin is “just an unbelievable talent,” Grundy said.

Montgomery High School, NJ – The December 2025 athletes of the month are tennis player Tongxin “Coco” Xiao and runner Daniel Leopold.
