Dorothy Carolyn (Adelson) Schilke was born on April 12, 1934, in Manville and died at home in Belle Mead on January 7, after a valiant struggle with Parkinson’s and dementia. She was 87.

Known as ‘Dottie’ to friends and family, she always had a dream to become a nurse and to care for others. Dottie put this dream on hold for many years while raising her children with her husband, Edward Schilke, to whom she was joyously married for 67 years.

During her tenure as a mother, Dottie was invested in her children’s lives and the lives of those around her. She was a ‘Cub Mother’ for the Cub Scout troop, a nursery school teacher, member of the church choir, a Sunday school teacher, a youth group leader, and an elder at Hillsborough Reformed Church in Millstone.

Once her children were old enough, Dottie went back to school to realize her nursing dream. She became an LPN, and happily gave 25 years to St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center in Lawrenceville, caring for others as her chosen vocation.

Dottie is survived by her husband Edward; son Lawrence (Lorrie) of Missouri; daughter Cynthia (Vincent) of California; and her grandchildren: Christie (Harry), Jennifer (Ben), Marina, Jason, Devon, and Ayden; and two great-grand children; JT and Jordyn.

A celebration of life will be held on April 9 at the Hillsborough Reformed Church in Millstone.
