Montgomery Township Committee unanimously approved a resolution to promote 22-year police force veteran Sean Sullivan from sergeant to lieutenant on April 3.

Sullivan has big shoes to fill, as he replaces the position held by Lt. Kurt Rock – a 30-year veteran of the MTPD. Rock recently retired and will be honored for his distinguished and lengthy service tonight (April 17) by Montgomery Township Committee.

About Lt. Sullivan

Montgomery Police Chief Silvio Bet says Lt. Sullivan has earned numerous awards, including one for rescuing residents from a burning home in the Cherry Valley community. On another occasion, Sullivan pulled an individual out of a burning apartment building in Pike Run, Bet said.

In addition to Sullivan’s acts of valor, he enthusiastically leads community pedestrian and traffic safety programs. For example, he recently coordinated a bike rodeo at Village Elementary School. Children learned the fundamentals of bike safety and sharing the road with motor vehicles.

Sullivan earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Rutgers University in 2001. He graduated from the Burlington County Police Academy in 2003, and was hired by the Montgomery Township Police Department the same year.

Over the years, Sullivan has served Montgomery as a patrol officer, traffic safety officer, and as a detective. He was promoted to sergeant in 2017.

Sullivan has played a vital role in construction project site plan reviews, traffic impact, and addressing community traffic concerns.

Police Chief Silvio Bet praised Sullivan during the April 3 public township committee meeting. “Recently, Sean has attended some the most challenging and selective leadership and command level courses offered to law enforcement,” Bet said. "I am confident he will be an intricate part of the command staff."

Lt. Sullivan replaces Police Lt. Kurt Rock, who recently retired from the force.

Rock retired this month, after serving the community with “unwavering commitment and exemplary professionalism” for 30 years, according to the township committee meeting agenda.

Throughout his distinguished career, the resolution states that Rock “has demonstrated integrity, leadership and a deep sense of duty, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues and citizens alike.”

Rock began his career with the township as a police officer in January 1995; was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2009 and then to lieutenant in the Patrol Division in 2016.

Rock has dedicated countless hours to training and mentoring new officers. He also fostered positive relationships within the community, contributing to an enhanced quality of life for Montgomery citizens.

He has served as member of the Somerset County Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Team, a certified radar operator instructor, a certified child passenger safety technician, and as a field training officer.
