Locals have wondered about the future of the PJ’s Pancake House & Tavern planned for a new building in the Village Walk at Montgomery on Route 206 in Skillman, near the Route 518 intersection.

The parking lot outside the new PJ’s Pancake House & Tavern in the Village Walk at Montgomery should be full of cars this fall.

The Montgomery News first reported in May 2024 that the popular breakfast spot planned an expansion into Montgomery Township, with a possible open date in Fall 2024.

As future customers anticipated the opening, the building sat empty for what seemed like a long time – about a year.

Finally, a “PJ’s Pancake House” sign went up this summer, followed by a post on the Pugliese Properties Facebook page on August 22 announcing that PJ’s is “scheduled to open this fall.”

The Pugliese family posted, “As 38-year residents of Montgomery Township, we knew one need that had to be filled was a place to sit and gather with family and friends over breakfast. That’s why we’re excited that the area’s best, PJ’s Pancake House & Tavern, has chosen The Village Walk at Montgomery for their newest location!”

“PJ’s will be sure to impress with their large dining room full of natural light, outdoor patio, fully stocked bar (because PJ’s is more than just breakfast), and incredible menu that customers have come to know and love.”

PJ’s will share a classic brick building with the AT&T store, which held its official grand opening on July 12. The store sells phones, tablets, wear ables, and offers in-store activation, prepaid phones, and DIRECTV STREAM packages.

PJ’s Pancake House, the iconic breakfast spot that opened on Nassau Street in Princeton in 1962, will serve more than just pancakes. The Montgomery PJ’s will be permitted to serve cocktails, beers, and is expected to offer a tavern menu — burgers, meatloaf, fish and chips, and diner classics — similar to its other locations that have liquor licenses and go by the name PJ’s Pancake House &Tavern. These include the locations in Ewing, Lawrenceville, and Robbinsville.

The original PJ’s Pancake House, located in the heart of Princeton, is still open. Owned and operated by the Gretalia Hospitality Group, the group has pancake houses in six communities: Lawrenceville on Route 1 (the old Michael’s Diner); West Windsor, Princeton, Robbinsville, Ewing, and Pennington Shopping Center.

The PJ’s in Kingston (in the former Main Street restaurant) at 4581 on Route 27 closed earlier this year. It is now Tino’s Artisan Pizza Co.

Brett Pugliese of Pugliese Properties, the developers of the Village Walk, had told The Montgomery News, “We are trying to provide what is needed in Montgomery.

“Montgomery doesn’t have a sit-down breakfast place — not since the Red Oak Diner closed,” he said. The old diner, once a popular spot on Route 206 across from Princeton Airport, is now a Chase Bank.

“We continue to strive to deliver a top-quality destination that Montgomery deserves and can be proud of, and that residents can enjoy for years to come.”

Gretalia Hospitality Group owns an array of restaurants, including More than Q, Mi Espana, Pennytown Pub in Pennington, and Osteria Procaccini to name a few listed on their website.
