The Science Olympiad is an extra-curricular opportunity at MHS that requires an almost year-round commitment. The team is coached by Mr. Jason Sullivan, MHS Science Dept. Chair and fellow Science Teacher Mr. David English.

Starting in November they plan their projects for the year’s competitions. The 2024-25 season brought them to Cornell, MIT, Princeton, UPenn, with the Regionals were held in Camden, NJ where the MHS team came in first in New Jersey, allowing them to move onto Nationals in Nebraska.

To offset the cost of the trip, the students organized a Junior Cougar Championship for roughly 200 VES and LMS students. Over 4 weekends the high school students mentored the younger ones and then held a small competition for those involved. In this way the program managed to cover most of the costs of the trip with the community’s support.

After a 2-day bus trip to Lincoln, Nebraska, the team prevailed and came in 10th place nationally in their division, having participated in 23 different events.

Mr. Sullivan made a presentation to the Board of Education on June 17, where the students also demonstrated some of their projects including an electric model car, an air trajectory apparatus, and a 4-gram helicopter that stayed afloat for almost 3 minutes at the competition. The projects the students made were created in-house with many of the parts being 3-D printed.

Mr. English thanked the MTSD administration and staff for their wonderful support. Then he turned to the students and said, “ Find things you like to do and do lots of them. I get to do that, and I wish that for all of you.”
