In this age of increasingly specialized athletes – year-round practices for the same sport – Montgomery junior Emma Seamon is a reminder of how kids should approach athletics.

A star forward for the Cougars’ soccer team and starting goaltender for the Hopewell- Montgomery co-op team, Seamon has become an invaluable part of each program. Soccer and hockey may not appear to have overlapping skills, but she says they do.

“Hockey has definitely helped me to be a better soccer player because I feel like I see the field better. It helps me to know where people are because as a hockey goalie, you have to be aware of what’s going on,” Seamon said.

Hockey coach Matt Fox and soccer coach Yannick Smith raved about her tenacity and competitiveness. Smith joked, “She plays soccer like a hockey player, and it’s probably one of the best compliments that I can give her.”

On the pitch, Seamon has accumulated 40 goals and 28 assists through three varsity seasons. While she excels as a forward, Coach Smith says he could put her anywhere on the field and see positive results.

Seamon has committed to the College of William & Mary in Virginia to play soccer.

Coach Fox echoed the praise, though he may be a little disappointed her hockey career is coming to a close, as she will have to focus on soccer in college:

“I’ve been telling her she could be a two-sport NCAA athlete,” Fox said. “I approve of her decision, obviously. I just wish she would give it a shot to see what she could do with hockey, because she could really make something happen in the D1 hockey world.”

Seamon still has another year of high school, and some colleges could have been hesitant to let their prized recruit suit up in between the pipes on the ice. However, they, like Seamon, recognize all that being a dual-sport athlete has to offer.

“They love it,” Seamon told The Montgomery News. “That was one of the reasons that I chose William & Mary. They wanted me for the player I was.”

Seamon’s superstitions include wearing red socks, tying her left skate first, and eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch. “My brother was a goalie, so I wanted to be just like him,” Seamon said. “I mean, I got raised into it. I love it. There’s something about trying to save a shot coming at you 50 miles per hour.”

Seamon credits her success in part to her soccer teammates — who provide an incredible support system — and to her hockey teammates — a male-heavy group that always sticks up for her.
