Montgomery High School pitcher Mason Neufeld took to the mound in the top of the seventh in a tie game against Pingry at the Somerset Patriots’ TD Bank Park in Bridgewater on April 11. With one out in the eighth, Neufield hit a double. Then teammate Henry Maddox hit a single, bringing Neufield home, and the score to 10-9.

Senior Muinat Tijani works hard, and helped her team place 3rd in the discus relay and 5th in the shot put relay at the Somerset County Relay Championship. Through Montgomery High School’s program, and her older sister Raliat’s influence, Tijani has learned what it takes to be a competitor.

Going into her junior season, Madelyn Epstein and the Montgomery dive team were in a jam. The Cougars had only two returning competitors, leaving Maddie to go on a recruiting trail in the offseason. Some of those new members had gymnastics backgrounds, similar to Epstein who originally did competitive trampoline and tumbling.

As a sophomore, Sohil Patel tried out for the Montgomery varsity fencing team. During a round-robin, he lost all five of his bouts and, unsurprisingly, did not initially make the team. He still had fencing friends, though, and wanted to be involved. Sohil became the Cougars’ armorer, fixing equipment and doing whatever he could to help the team. A year later, he not only made the team, but was named captain.

Emma Reyes-Cano and Obinna Obuba are The Montgomery News March Athletes of the Month.

There have been some drastic changes to Obinna Obuba’s life since his last athlete of the month nomination in May 2025. The Montgomery senior spent his fall hauling in 21 catches for 534 yards and six touchdowns on the gridiron, helping the Cougars to a Section Two, Group Four championship appearance against Phillipsburg. However, his best work still comes on the track, where he owns the school record in the 55m hurdles, and lowered it in dramatic fashion.
