Police Conduct Unannounced Truck Inspection, Find 37 Violations in Montgomery - 13 with Serious Safety Issues

In an effort to prevent crashes before they occur, the Montgomery Township Police Department, in partnership with the New Jersey State Police, conducted an unannounced roadside truck inspection on August 12 on Route 601. It resulted in 19 inspections with 37 total violations. Of those inspections, 13 resulted in out-of-service violations, while seven involved weight violations.

A New Jersey commercial vehicle out-of-service (OOS) violation is an official order by law enforcement or a safety inspector halting a commercial motor vehicle, driver, or carrier operation because it poses an immediate critical safety hazard — for example, broken brakes, worn tires, steering failure, or damaged coupling devices. Operation is strictly prohibited until fixed.

Montgomery Township Police Chief Silvio Bet said the enforcement effort was coordinated by Sgt. Timothy Giaccone and Officer Christopher Parlow of the Montgomery Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit.

It was part of an ongoing effort to promote commercial vehicle safety and to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations governing commercial motor vehicles, he said. Officers from the Montgomery Township Police Department and members of the New Jersey State Police focused on identifying unsafe vehicles, driver violations, weight violations, and other conditions that could pose a risk to motorists, pedestrians, and other roadway users.

The joint enforcement effort highlights the importance of cooperation between local and state law enforcement agencies in addressing commercial motor vehicle safety and maintaining safe roadways throughout the community.

Chief Bet said, “Commercial motor vehicles play an essential role in transporting goods and services throughout New Jersey. However, their size and weight can make violations involving vehicle condition, driver compliance, and weight particularly concerning. Enforcement details such as this are intended not only to identify violations, but also to encourage voluntary compliance and prevent crashes before they occur.”

The Montgomery Township Police Department and the New Jersey State Police remain committed to working together to enhance roadway safety through education, enforcement, and proactive traffic safety initiatives. Additional commercial motor vehicle enforcement details will be conducted throughout Montgomery Township as part of these ongoing efforts.
