Police Arrest Newark Man for Kidnapping and Sexual Assault in Montgomery Township

Montgomery Township Police Director James M. Gill announced the arrest of Hajkim A. Samuel, age 43, of Newark in relation to kidnapping and sexual assault that occurred on April 8 in Montgomery Township.

Somerville Police Department received a 9-1-1 call on Thursday, April 9 at 5:42 pm from a victim reporting she had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted. Detectives from the Montgomery Township Police Department and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit interviewed the victim, an adult female.

Hajkim A. Samuel, age 43, of Newark was arrested in relation to kidnapping and sexual assault that occurred on April 8 in Montgomery Township.

The victim reported that Hajkim Samuel, who is known to the victim, forced his way into her residence and held her captive at knife point. Samuel proceeded to sexually assault the victim numerous times in her residence and then forced her to travel to a hotel located in Middlesex County where he also sexually assaulted her. The victim was eventually able to escape Samuel and call 9-1-1.

On Friday, April 10, at approximately 1 am, detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, Montgomery Township Police Department, with assistance from Newark Police Department Officers executed a Superior Court ordered search warrant on a residence belonging to a family member of Samuel on Bergen Street, Newark. As a result, Hajkim Samuel was located at the residence hiding under a bed and was apprehended without incident.

Prosecutor Robertson stated that as a result of this investigation, defendant Samuel has been charged with 1st degree Kidnapping, 1st degree Aggravated Sexual Assault, and 3rd degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose. Defendant Samuel was lodged at the Somerset County Jail pending a detention bail hearing in this matter.
