Distracted Driving Enforcement Campaign

During April, the department participated in New Jersey’s statewide Distracted Driving Enforcement and Awareness Campaign. Through funding provided by the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety (NJDHTS), Montgomery Township Police received 50 grant-funded enforcement hours dedicated to distracted driving enforcement and public awareness.

During the campaign, officers conducted 112 motor vehicle stops, issued 75 traffic summonses, including 56 cell phone-related violations, and made two arrests.

Click It or Ticket Campaign

From May 18 through May 31, Montgomery Township Police participated in the statewide Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign. The department was awarded 40 grant-funded enforcement hours through the NJDHTS to focus on seat belt compliance and occupant safety.

Preliminary enforcement data shows that officers stopped 99 vehicles and issued 68 summonses, including approximately 40 seat belt violations and 12 hazardous moving violations. Officers also arrested two drivers for outstanding traffic warrants.

Operation Safe Passage

In preparation for the Memorial Day holiday travel period, Montgomery Township Police also participated in Operation Safe Passage, a traffic safety initiative funded by the NJDHTS. The department received 16 grant-funded enforcement hours, supplemented by the Drunk Driving Enforcement Fund, to conduct directed patrols focused on identifying and removing impaired drivers from the roadways.

The initiative concluded with officers conducting 35 motor vehicle stops and issuing 14 summonses.

Goal: Zero Traffic Safety Initiative

The department continues to participate in the Goal: Zero enforcement campaign, a statewide initiative supporting New Jersey’s Target Zero Safety Action Plan. The program seeks to eliminate roadway fatalities, serious injuries, and crashes through data-driven enforcement and education efforts.

Goal: Zero focuses on dangerous driving behaviors that contribute to serious and fatal crashes, including speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, improper passing, and intersection-related violations. Enforcement details are strategically deployed during locations and times where crash data indicates the greatest risk.

The most recent Goal: Zero enforcement detail was conducted on May 17 between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. During the operation, two officers assigned specifically to the detail conducted 15 motor vehicle stops, issued 17 summonses, and arrested one driver on outstanding warrants.

Through continued traffic enforcement and driver education efforts, the Montgomery Township Police Department remains committed to encouraging safer driving behaviors, reducing crashes, and advancing the goal of zero roadway deaths and serious injuries.

Montgomery Township Police Chief Silvio Bet emphasized the importance of these initiatives.

"We want every driver and passenger to arrive at their destination safely," said Chief Bet. "These enforcement initiatives are about preventing tragedies before they happen by encouraging responsible driving habits, whether that means buckling up, driving sober, slowing down, or staying focused behind the wheel. Through targeted enforcement and education, our officers are working to make Montgomery Township roadways safer for everyone, especially during the busy Memorial Day and summer travel period."
