The Montgomery Summer Farmers Market returns to the Montgomery Municipal Building on May 30, and is open every Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm.

Montgomery Friends of Open Space (MFOS) Market Manager Lorette Pruden says, “This is the market’s 24th year. It is also the USA’s 250th, so we’ll be celebrating that!”

Crown Acoustic, a local acoustic trio that plays Americana, country, folk, popular music, will perform the first Saturday of each month.

Vendor Highlight

Pruden says farmers Zell George and Shuhong Wang of Zell’s Farm have become anchors for the Montgomery Farmers’ Market.

George says, “We lived in Bergen County for eight years before making the jump to farming.”

They planned to purchase land, but eventually leased land from Ed Clerico in Hillsborough.

George said, “The Clericos helped us with tractor lessons and materials sourcing advice.”

George also got helpful advice from the Northeast Organic Farming Association and Pruden.

During Hurricane Ida Zell said, “We lost all our chickens in the lower pastures and most of the infrastructure.”

They moved and then leased land on Lima Farms in Hillsborough. After the move, “the only things we could still grow were mushrooms. In the beginning we grew shiitake and oyster mushrooms; now we are growing 14 varieties throughout the year.”

Zell’s Farm now also grows produce, including specialty peppers, cultivated greens, unusual cucumbers, yard long beans, water spinach, okra, and luffa.

Zell’s mushrooms were recently certified organic. “We have always grown without herbicides or pesticides," George said.
