Pedestrian safety enforcement operation on Blue Spring Road

During the July 22 operation a Montgomery Officer dressed in plain, highly-visible clothes used a marked crosswalk to cross Blue Spring Road while uniformed officers monitored the crosswalk for motorists who failed to stop or who took unsafe and illegal actions. During the most recent operation within a approximate four hour period there were 66 complaint drivers who stopped for the Officer in the crosswalk and allowed him to cross and 55 drivers failed to stop for the Officer. Of the 55 drivers who failed to stop, 46 were able to be stopped by police. The other drivers were not able to be stopped due Officers being unavailable with other stopped violators. A total of 33 drivers received summons for 39:4-36 (Not stopping for a pedestrian in crosswalk) and 13 received written warnings. In addition, two motorists were issued summonses for operating without a driver’s license. All stopped drivers were provided educational palm cards that explains the pedestrian law and what a driver's responsibilities are regarding pedestrians and crosswalks.

Tiger's Tale

From 2023 to 2024, traffic fatalities increased by 14%. This overall increase was largely due to a 36% increase in pedestrian fatalities. As of this month, traffic fatalities are down 17% and pedestrian fatalities are down 31% compared to the same time period last year. “As part of our ongoing commitment to community safety, our department is actively enforcing pedestrian safety laws to protect everyone on our roadways,” said Montgomery Police Chief Silvio Bet. “In New Jersey, drivers are required to stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalks and must not pass vehicles stopped for pedestrians. Furthermore, pedestrians should use crosswalks and obey traffic signals for their safety. These simple steps save lives. Our officers are out there to ensure that both drivers and pedestrians are following the law—because safety is a shared responsibility.”

Crosswalk enforcement actions are an effective way to communicate pedestrian right-of-way laws to both drivers and pedestrians. The Police Department takes enforcement actions in response to community requests and to educate the general public on the rules at marked and unmarked crossings. The police department will continue to conduct pedestrian safety enforcement operations in the coming months at various locations within the township.

The Montgomery Township Police Department would like to thank AAA for being a strong advocate for traffic safety and providing our agency with a pedestrian enforcement grant and training that aided in this enforcement effort being successful.

The enforcement operation was coordinated by Sgt. Tim Giaccone, Traffic Bureau Supervisor.
