As electric bicycles continue to grow in popularity, the Montgomery Township Police Department is encouraging all residents to become familiar with New Jersey's updated e-bike laws and to make safety their highest priority.

"Our goal is to educate our community and help prevent injuries before they occur. We encourage every rider and parent to understand the new requirements and make safety their top priority. Riders who understand the law and practice safe riding habits help make our roads, parks, and neighborhoods safer for everyone." - Chief Silvio Bet

Before You Ride

  • Wear a properly fitted helmet.

  • Obey all traffic signs and signals.

  • Ride with the flow of traffic.

  • Use front and rear lights when riding after dark.

  • Stay alert—avoid cell phones and headphones while riding.

  • Inspect your brakes, tires, battery, and lights before every ride.

Know the Law

New Jersey law establishes different requirements depending on the type and classification of an electric bicycle. Depending on the e-bike, riders may be required to:

  • Register the vehicle with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).

  • Obtain the appropriate driver's license or e-bike license.

  • Carry liability insurance, where applicable.

  • Meet minimum age requirements.

  • Follow all traffic laws applicable to bicycles and motor vehicles.

  • Before purchasing or operating an e-bike, riders should confirm which requirements apply to their specific model.

Parents: Help Keep Young Riders Safe

  • Know the speed and capabilities of your child's e-bike.

  • Review traffic laws together.

  • Require a helmet every ride.

  • Ensure the e-bike complies with New Jersey law.

  • Supervise younger or inexperienced riders.
