Emma Reyes-Cano and Obinna Obuba: The Montgomery News March Athletes of the Month

There have been some drastic changes to Obinna Obuba’s life since his last athlete of the month nomination in May 2025. Namely: A commitment to run for the University of Pennsylvania’s track & field program next year. The Montgomery senior spent his fall hauling in 21 catches for 534 yards and six touchdowns on the gridiron, helping the Cougars to a Section Two, Group Four championship appearance against Phillipsburg. However, his best work still comes on the track, where he owns the school record in the 55m hurdles, and lowered it in dramatic fashion during the Skyland Conference Championships. Read more

For years, girls’ wrestling was an afterthought. There was little to no participation, lacking resources, and not enough girls like Emma Reyes-Cano leading the charge. The Montgomery freshman is off to a wonderful career, ripping off her last 11 matches to boost her record to 17-6. Read more
