What if you could get the house of your dreams delivered right to you — but with assembly required? That’s the background of the “kit houses” — more than 70,000 of them, by one estimate — sold in America and Canada by the Sears, Roebuck & Company between 1908 and 1942. Excellent examples abound right here in The Montgomery News readership area, most notably in Rocky Hill.

The public is invited to a free Pollinator Planter Walk on Sunday, August 24 at 9:00 am. Sourland Conservancy Stewardship Interns, Kristen Falzon and Ellie DiBartolomeo, will introduce participants to the benefits of planting natives in containers–and maybe even collect and share some seeds!

Just as Rocky Hill Borough lacked sufficient land to satisfy its Round 3 obligation, it lacks sufficient land to satisfy the new state mandate to provide 37 more units or credits to fulfill its Round 4 obligation. The Rocky Hill 4th Round Housing Element seeks a “Vacant Land Adjustment (VLA).”

The Montgomery High School Science Olympiad Team was very busy over Memorial Day weekend, when they traveled to Lincoln, NE to compete and came in 10th in the (Division C) National Tournament.

In May, Preservation New Jersey named the flood-damaged and vacant Washington Well Farm in Skillman to its 2025 list of the 10 Most Endangered Historic Places. The Dutch farmstead, established circa 1750, is tied to the Revolutionary War and is known for a well where George Washington’s troops stopped to drink in 1778. Flood damage caused by Hurricane Ida in 2021 severely damaged the home and some outbuildings.

Montgomery Township officials plan to install a street sign in honor of hometown hero Stephen Warner, who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1971. A dedication ceremony will take place at Community Drive—the street that connects Orchard Road to the Municipal complex—on Memorial Day [Monday, May 26] at 10 am.

Chief Financial Officer Michael Pitts introduced the 2025 budget and gave a presentation at the Montgomery Township Committee meeting on April 3. The 2025 budget is scheduled for adoption at the May 1 Township Committee Meeting. The municipal component of the property tax rate is increasing to $0.48. That is a 2.89% increase over last year.
