Elm Street Homeowner Allegedly Shoots Gun at Visitor

Montgomery Township Police received and responded to a call from a male victim who reported that an Elm Drive resident in Skillman answered the front door, exited the residence, and then fired a single shot from a handgun at him while outside of the residence at 5:34 this morning.

The shooter is known to the victim, police said.

Following the Somerset County SWAT activation, the incident had a peaceful resolution, according to a report emailed to members of the press at 3:30 pm today by Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson.

The male victim, who had gone to the residence in an attempt to collect a debt from the homeowner, reported to police that he was not struck by the shot.

Prosecutor Robertson stated that Montgomery Township Police responded to the scene in an attempt to make contact with the resident. At 6:35 am, after several unsuccessful attempts to make contact with the homeowner, Montgomery Township Police made a request for the Somerset County SWAT and Crisis Negotiators activation to the scene for a possible barricaded subject.

Members of the Somerset County SWAT along with Crisis Negotiators, Somerset County Communications Mobile Command Center, and Tactical Emergency Medics responded to the scene. As a result of this activation, crisis negotiators were successful in making contact and speaking with the sole male occupant of the residence. At 9:20 am, upon a successful negotiation, the male occupant complied and voluntarily exited the residence where he was secured and turned over to Montgomery Township Police Detectives for further investigation.

No charges have been filed as the matter currently remains under investigation by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Montgomery Township Police Department.

Prosecutor Robertson requests anyone with information to contact the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit at 908.231.7100.
