John J. Soos, 83

NJ State Police Trooper

John J. Soos, 83, of Lewes, Delaware — a former resident of Montgomery Township for 53 years — died on April 14 at Beebe Medical Center after a long battle with heart disease. He died peacefully surrounded by family.


Born in Perth Amboy, John joined the U.S. Navy upon graduation from high school in 1957. In 1962, he joined the NJ State Police, the 60th class. He settled in Montgomery Township with his wife Cheryl Patterson Soos in 1964.


John graduated from The College of New Jersey, earning a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, and retired from the NJ State Police as a lieutenant. In 1988, he began a second career and founded Soos Radon & Electric, Inc., a radon mitigation company, which is successfully functioning as a second- generation family business. He and his wife Cheryl retired to Lewes, Delaware in 2017.


He is pre-deceased by his father, John J. Soos, Sr.; his mother, Stacia Soos; and brothers Robert Soos and Eugene Soos. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Cheryl; his brother James Soos, and his sister, Patricia Baldy. He has two sons, John, III (Larissa) and Thomas (Corey); a daughter, Jennifer Lebron (Sam); and five grandchildren: Brett Soos, Kayla Soos, Braden Soos, Samuel Lebron, and Sophie Lebron.


His family was an important part of his life. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all. John also enjoyed shooting sporting clays and often entered competitive events.


To honor John’s wishes, he has been cremated and will have a celebration of life dinner with immediate family members at a later date.
