A Man on a Motorcycle Died on Canal Road after Striking a Trailer Attached to a Truck

Luis Ruiz, 43, of Bridgewater was riding a 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle north on Canal Road on Monday at 8:23 pm when he collided with a trailer attached to a 2019 Ford pickup truck operated by Octaviano Chavez, 56, of Princeton.

Chavez was traveling south on the narrow Canal Road, near Elm Street, according to Franklin Township police. EMS personnel treated Ruiz on scene, then transported him to a local area trauma center. Ruiz was pronounced dead at 9:40 pm

The Franklin Township Police Department had received a 9-1-1 call reporting the motor vehicle crash.


Canal Road was closed for approximately four hours during the investigation of this incident. The Franklin Township Police Department, along with the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team, is conducting an ongoing investigation into the contributing factors of the crash.


Franklin Public Safety Director Quovella Maeweather said, “We extend our condolences to the family of Mr. Luis Ruiz.”
