17-Year-Old Killed when Car Entered Canal in Franklin Township

Barbara A. Preston l January 30, 2021

After searching for more than an hour, several sources are reporting that first responders found the body of a 17-year-old girl from Kendall Park in the D&R Canal in Franklin Township on a frigid Friday evening on January 29. An investigation is currently underway, but it appears the girl was driving the vehicle when it left the roadway and entered the canal, according to Somerset County officials.

The Franklin Township Police Department received a 911 call that a vehicle had left the roadway at the Canal and Suydam roads intersection around 8 pm on Friday. The incident was reported by RLS Media and on the Neighbors App. The Montgomery News was on the scene, and left phone messages with the Franklin Township police department, and is awaiting a call back.

Officers at the scene told The News that the situation was "classified" and would not comment regarding the reason for at least a dozen police vehicles with siren's flashing, in addition to fire trucks, ambulances, a dive team, and a helicopter dispatched from the NJ State Police Aviation Unit.

The Montgomery News reporter drove to the scene Friday night in search of information, and witnessed a scene out of a horror film unfold. Reports on social media appeared on the reporter's cell phone as follows:

"Dive team deployed. Got our best from the county on this situation. Have faith."

"Prayers for a successful rescue. God bless our first responders."

"Somerset County, Franklin Township, motor vehicle accident on Canal Road and Suydam. Overturn vehicle in canal with entrapment. Stations 28 and 56 dispatched."

No further details are available at this time. The Montgomery News will give an update when available.

The Montgomery News sends prayers to the family and loved ones, and thanks local first responders for their hard work and dedication.
