Selfless Civil Servant

April 8, 1949 - September 29, 2026

Belle Mead resident Onkar Singh Narula died suddenly on September 29 in New Delhi, India. He was 77.

Narula was a part time resident of of Montgomery Township, NJ, since 2008 and longtime member of the Montgomery Senior Center program at Otto Kaufman Community Center. He spent his time between his homes here and in India.

He had a double master’s degrees in political science and arts from Delhi University. As one of the highest ranking senior civil servants in Indian government, he was the deputy secretary of the Ministry of Power and worked for both the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Urban Development. He was a member of several officers’ clubs.

An avid skilled table tennis player, he loved long walks, Sudoku, travel, and cinema. He was a generous and charitable man throughout his lifetime and beloved by all who knew him. Onkar was the person everyone went to for sound advice, counsel, and someone to lean on in hard times. Above all, he was a loving father and devoted grandfather to his four grandchildren.

He leaves behind many family members in India and his devastated family in Montgomery: his son Kanwar, daughter-in-law Marisa, and grandsons Jai and Joshua.

He is also survived by his daughter Jasjit Kaur of New Delhi, grandson Arjun, and granddaughter Aarshia, and by many extended family members across India, the United States, and various other countries around the world.

Onkar was predeceased by his loving wife Narinder (nee Bedi) in 2012.

Antrim Ardas will take place Sunday, October 4, 12 pm in Vasant Vihar Delhi. An Ardas at Sikh Sabha in Lawrenceville, NJ will be held on the same day. All are welcome. A celebration of life in Montgomery will be planned sometime in the future.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks to make a charitable donation of your choice to a local gurudwara (or house of worship, or charity of your choice) in memory of his name.
