Cannabis Legalization Information Session for Montgomery Residents

May 25, 2021

Montgomery Township officials will hold a virtual information session on Thursday, May 27 at 7 pm to educate residents on the new state cannabis laws. Elected officials will be looking to collect community input regarding local decisions that need to be made by August.

Following the recent legalization of cannabis by the NJ legislature, municipalities are empowered to make decisions related to business zoning, regulation, and taxes specific to cultivation, manufacture, distribution, wholesale, and retail sales of cannabis.

"This is the beginning of a process of educating residents and gathering public input before we make decisions about cannabis related businesses," said Montgomery Mayor Devra Keenan.

On Thursday, Montgomery Township professionals will make presentations about the new laws related to cannabis and will explain the options open to the township with respect to regulating and taxing cannabis businesses.

"It's important to realize that legalization is a foregone conclusion," said Mayor Keenan. "The only questions before us are related to whether we'll allow cannabis businesses, which kinds, and how we will regulate and tax them if they are allowed."

The meeting will be held virtually on Zoom, and broadcast on Cable TV Channel 29.
