At about 1 pm today, Hillsborough Township Police reported to the area of Route 206 near Hillsborough Centre, south of Amwell Road, for reports of shots fired.

Responding Hillsborough Township police officers were advised by eyewitnesses of a reported shooting and provided with a description of the alleged male shooter and the alleged male victim. Both the alleged shooter and victim had both fled the area on foot prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

Officers quickly ascertained the legitimacy of the shooting, observed and secured a crime scene.  Hillsborough Township Officers established a perimeter of the area and began to search for both the shooter and the victim. As a precaution, authorities placed area schools in a secure hold and advised local residents and businesses to use caution.

As a result of the investigation, investigators were able to locate and speak with the victim in the incident, whom authorities are identifying as a 19-year-old Hillsborough resident. The male victim was not injured in the incident.

Through investigative means the alleged shooter was identified as Dawan Jeter.  Authorities were subsequently granted a Superior Court Search Warrant for Jeter’s residence.   A Tactical Team within the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office executed the search warrant which yielded negative results for defendant Jeter.  Authorities were subsequently made aware that Jeter was enroute to Hillsborough Police Department to surrender to authorities.

Jeter was charged with first degree Attempted Murder, second degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, second degree Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose, and third degree Endangering Another Person. Jeter was lodged at the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing in this matter.

Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald stated that a significant law enforcement response consisting of detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes, Crime Scene Investigations Unit, Somerset County Sheriff’s Officers, and Somerset County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit, responded to assist in the search.  The New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit was also dispatched on request to provide aerial support in the search.
