Montgomery Speaks Out Against Racism

Montgomery residents have a couple ways to protest racism in the next several days: a virtual protest on ZOOM on Saturday, June 6 or a live event at Mill Pond Park on Sunday, June 7. Many Montgomery residents attended a protest in Princeton on Tuesday, June 2.

A Virtual Gathering Via Zoom and Candle-Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, June 6

One Montgomery and Montgomery Mosaic will host a virtual event to condemn racism, and specifically the tragic killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and all who have lost their lives to racist violence. The Zoom meeting will begin at 8 pm on Saturday, June 6. It will be followed with a candle lighting ceremony at 8:46 pm.

Montgomery Mayor Sadaf Jaffer, who is president of Montgomery Mosaic, says: “Some people are unable to attend protests because of health issues and the COVID-19 crisis. This is an opportunity to join together in solidarity.“

During the virtual event, “pre-approved” speakers will share words, poems, prayers, and songs, according to the event press release. The candlelight vigil will last for 8 minutes and 46 seconds — the amount of time a police officer had his knee on the neck of George Floyd.

Members of the public who would like to speak should email: MontgomeryTogether@twp.montgomery.nj.us.
